Bangladesh is a unitary republic with a parliamentary form of government. In the Economist Democracy Index 2024, it received an overall score of 4.44/10 ("hybrid regime") and a rating of 6.08/10 for electoral processes and pluralism.
On the national level, only the (currently* unicameral) parliament, the Jatiya Sangsad is elected directly, usually every 5 years. Voting is not compulsory, and the minimum age for voting is 18 years.
300 representatives are elected in a single-round, choose-one plurality system in single-seat districts and a further 50 seats are reserved for women (allocated proportionally to the other seats).
More, especially on the reforms later.
